2016 Election round-up
Some races STILL to close to call....

The Local 1014 Executive Board has finally recovered from our work and efforts in the November 8th General Election.  Our Union was heavily involved in the Primary and General Elections in LA County and the State and National elections as well.  We funded and worked powerfully and effectively in races that matter intensely for Los Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 Members.

You can find a complete list of election results here.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IMPACT FOR FIREFIGHTER ISSUES

The news of the night of course, was the Presidential Election, and our new President is Donald J. Trump.  The United States Congress and United States Senate also were won on balance by the Republican Party.  We know many of you voted Trump and many Clinton.... probably at the same rate as the national vote, almost 50/50... As you are aware the IAFF did not endorse in the Presidential race with good purpose, but we will certainly have to react to the change in the climate we exist in at the Federal Level.  While there are many issues we all put on balance for the Nation as a whole in our votes, there will be consequences we must deal with on the Union level for Firefighters in the IAFF.  I have already spoken with President Harold Schaitberger along with top Fire Union Leaders in the US, and indicated our desire to get to work early to put our members in a place where we can survive the next 4 years.  President Elect Trump, along with a Republican Controlled Congress and Senate will likely make good on his positions to fight collective bargaining nationally, put us in Social Security, tax the value of our health care contributions, cut SAFER, UASI, and FEMA grant funding in half, and with the likely appointments to the Supreme Court of the United States we will not find favor on the decisions appealed for our retirement and healthcare for existing employees like the Marin County decision that may find it's way to the US Supreme County.  We have our work cut out for us to survive, and lucky for us in California we have protections in our State Laws and MOU's for our working conditions, wages, hours and retirement and healthcare.   We must reach out to the Trump Administration and get to cutting deals or fighting to keep our place... it will not be easy, that is simply a fact.

CALIFORNIA ELECTION AND MEASURE VICTORIES FOR LOCAL 1014 AND CPF AND IAFF

U.S. SENATOR:
In the race for the United States Senate Seat in California, we saw current California Attorney General Kamala Harris received 63% of the vote to defeat Loretta Sanchez with 37%.

For California, we had remarkable victories in the US, State and Local Elections for 1014 and CPF and IAFF endorsed candidates.  United States Senator Elect Kamala Harris is a longtime friend of Local 1014 and her work as AG to protect our pensions was unparalleled by any other elected leader. We will be working closely with her on our Federal issues to keep our members protected.  We also won all US Congressional Seats we endorsed in for California. We also were victorious in the state initiatives we backed or opposed.  We won our position on 7 measures.... Props 51 and 52 (YES), Prop 53 (NO), Prop 55 (YES), Prop 58 (YES), Prop 59 (YES), and Prop 66 (YES).  WOW!

COUNTY RACES AND INITIATIVES

L.A. COUNTY BOS, 4th DISTRICT:
U.S. Representative Janice Hahn won the seat with 56% of the votes over Steve Napolitano who received 44% of the vote.

L.A. COUNTY BOS, 5th DISTRICT:
Kathryn Barger won the seat with 59% of the vote over Darrell Park who received 41%.

Local 1014 was once again at the center of the work in electing our two newest LA County Board of Supervisors.  Kathryn Barger in the 5th District and Janice Hahn in the 4th District.  Both races were hard fought, expensive and all in for Local 1014!  This will give us the first ever 5 Supervisor Board elected by Local 1014 and our Labor allies.  This is historic and with hard work should set Local 1014 members in a great place for the next 5 to 10 years.  We also helped gain victories in Local County Measures in an alliance with our Labor FED Partners, especially the building trades unions in passing Measure JJJ - The Build Better LA Measure that will bring thousands of LA County Jobs and Tax Revenue for our Fire District.

Congratulations to Council Member elect Rick Mullen, Fire Captain in Battalion 5, on winning the most votes in the City of Malibu election.

Local 1014 put a ton of effort in many of our Contract Cities, but none more than in Pomona this election.  Incumbent Mayor Elliot Rothman who had turned his back on LA County Fire Fighters one time too many in the last year, was ousted and new Mayor Tim Sandoval won the race. We also helped to secure candidates in two other seats, but the count is not done for official results likely to be released Tuesday.  It was a bloody battle and election and in the end, Elliot Rothman and anyone else watching can know it is better to work with Local 1014 than against any day of the week. We will begin taking the steps to work on LF 181 staffing and a plan to return the 6 positions.  We have not forgotten nor given up!

We would also like to say congratulations to all the other CPF affiliate Locals in their victories, but none more sweet than in Costa Mesa, where I along with President Rob Gagne and Local 1014 Members walked precincts to claim victory in two out of three races including sending the Tea Party anti-Firefighter, pension killing, 1/3 staff reducing, privatize Costa Mesa Fire Mayor Home!  We will work to help ensure he never sees the light of day again!  This was an important victory to us all indirectly in the protection of our right to provide Fire Based EMS and pension protection.  I drew inspiration from this small Local of 65 plus members once 90 plus in their Solidarity and Passion of fight to get this done.  Truly one of the greatest Firefighter Political Victories of the Decade.  Great work!

Thanks to all Local 1014 members for providing the Solidarity that gives us the Strength and Power to get it done on so many fronts.  The work we have done this election cycle will be the core of the efforts and effectiveness in our work for the next 10 years.  There will be plenty of work for us, but in California we will find new allies in our Elected Officials like we haven't had in a long time.  Let us never rest, never be complacent, never be out of the game... "All Politics Is Local" , "Money is the Mothers Milk of Politics", and "Political Action is how we survive", it's that simple and we have done very well once again.  Share in the pride we should all have as Local 1014 Members!
