Friday Update 6-7-24
Updated On: Jul 21, 2024

Brothers and Sisters,

As we all know, for the past several months, Local 1014 has been aggressively moving forward on the signature gathering for our ballot initiative to secure more funding for our Department, including staffing, infrastructure, apparatus, and equipment.

We are pleased to announce that we have gathered over 180,000 signatures from voters in the LA County Fire District. This Monday, we submitted our signatures for review to LA County to qualify for the November 2024 ballot. We have 30 days to verify the signatures and move to a Board of Supervisors' vote to put it on the ballot.

We have failing engines, failing infrastructure in our stations, and outdated equipment. We need to increase our staffing to NFPA standards of 4-0 staffing for our safety and the community.

We cannot stress enough that political action is the most important thing we do as a union to safeguard our members. This measure is critical to the future of the Department and the future security of our members and their families.

Thank you to our members for your continued support as we move to the next phase of this measure and securing our future.

Political Action and Advocacy

Local 1014, California Professional Firefighters (CPF) and the International Firefighters Association (IAFF) have always supported elected officials who support Fire Department-related issues. We are nonpartisan and have a history of supporting those candidates who are supportive of your hard-earned wages, hours, and working conditions and who respect the risk we take each day to protect our communities.

Our Local Political Action Plan always begins with our local elected officials and state officials. The Local 1014 endorsement brand is strong and one of the most sought-after endorsements for any candidate.

Local 1014 spent significant money on Republican candidates in the March primary races. Local 1014 has a near equal split of registered members of the Republican and Democratic Parties on your Union Executive Board who support and represent you.

This election cycle, CPF’s Republican Independent Expenditure program was larger than any other organizations’ effort to elect Republican candidates for State Legislature.

Firefighter and labor issues have no assigned political party. Our job as your Union is to fight for our members and their families. We support those who support us and our fire issues and will continue to do so regardless of political party.

POTENCHIN FAMILY FUND

Mike Potechin, a man who was a friend to many who worked in our SCBA shops and maintained our hose and small engine shops, passed away this week.  An absolute unsung hero to us all in keeping our main equipment and tools of our trade-in play for us.  Mike was a solid family man and kind to all; his work was amazing on our behalf.  He always had an amazing positive attitude and good nature. Now, his family will need our help.

Please send thoughts and prayers and consider a meaningful donation to the GoFundMe set up to help his wife and kids. "We Shall Not Forget”
Clcik here to donate today.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
