Friday Update 7-5-24
Updated On: Sep 05, 2024

Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of the Los Angeles County Firefighters, IAFF Local 1014 Executive Board, we would like to wish you and your families a safe and healthy holiday weekend.

As you enjoy your families and friends, please remember that summer is a busy time of year for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Special thank you to all our members serving our communities this holiday in our stations and dispatch center.

This weekend and every day, please remember not to drink and drive! Get a car, get a lift or a room but celebrate responsibly.

Celebration of Life for Brother Andrew Pontious

On Saturday, family, friends, and colleagues gathered together to celebrate the life of Fire Fighter Andrew “Uncle” Pontious. We saw our fire family come together for one of the most touching displays of the “Sea of Blue” honoring his sacrifice.

Andrew was remembered as a dedicated public servant, with a deep love for his family, including his wife, stepdaughter, parents, brother, sister-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Andrew lived life with a love of family along with his many hobbies and interests – his passion for animal rescues, fishing, wildlife, and hunting – defined a man with a love of the outdoors.  As a child, Andrew and his brother, Dave, grew up watching Emergency, having fun role playing as firefighters and performing rescues.

Andrew faithfully served the LACoFD and Los Angeles County residents for over 19 years.  During the memorial service, the flag that flew over Fire Station 93 in the City of Palmdale was presented to Andrew’s wife Kim by Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone along with a bible from Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte, Vice President Tony Carcioppolo and Director Chris Reade. The IAFF Medal of Valor was present by GST Lima and DVP Gilman, and Fallen Firefighter Memorial Coin set presented by CPF President Rice and his Board.

May God bless Andrew, his family, his memory, and the many loved ones he leaves behind.  He will never be forgotten.

The Local 1014 Citizens Initiative Qualifies for the November 2024 Ballot

We are please to announce that the LA County Registrar Recorder notified us this week that our ballot initiative to get more resources for our Firefighters has been certified as having sufficient signatures to qualify for the November 2024 ballot!

Last month, we submitted over 180,000 voter signatures to qualify for the ballot. With lots of positive feedback and support from voters out in the field, we are excited to move to the next stage and continue to fight for our members.

We have failing engines, failing infrastructure in our stations, and outdated equipment. We need to increase our staffing to NFPA standards of 4-0 staffing for our safety and the community.

We cannot stress enough that political action is the most important thing we do as a union to safeguard our members. This measure is critical to the future of the Department and the future security of our members and their families.

Thank you to our members for your continued support as we move to the next phase of this measure and securing our future.

BOYCOTT SMART & FINAL-  Local 1014 Stands in Solidarity with our Teamster Brothers and Sisters

Over 600 warehouse workers represented by Teamsters Local 630 at two Chedraui-owned Smart & Final grocery store warehouses in Southern California went on an unfair labor strike this month, protesting mass layoffs and other unfair labor practices.

Without these long-time, hard-working employees, Smart & Final could experience massive supply chain disruptions during one of the busiest shopping times of the year. Smart & Final refuses to comply with the law and continues to move forward with its unlawful plan to terminate all these employees and transfer their work to a new facility.

Do not give your hard-earned money to a company that refuses to treat workers with dignity and respect. Stand in solidarity with the Teamsters by boycotting Smart & Final stores and signing a petition for Chedraui CEO Carlos Smith to respect these workers.

Teamsters have always supported our members and our issues and showed up for us. Let’s support them now! Union Strong!

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
