Brothers and Sisters,
FLAG CEREMONY ACTIVE-DUTY DEATH OF FIRE FIGHTER PARAMEDIC DUSTIN ROBERTO

Today, we began the memorial services honoring our Brother, Dustin Roberto, with a Flag Ceremony at Fire Station 93 in the City of Palmdale. Fire Fighter Paramedic Dustin M. Roberto passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024, after battling a short-term illness.

Fire Fighter Paramedic Roberto was a dedicated public servant who faithfully served Los Angeles County residents, the County, and our Fire Department for nearly five years. We are truly grateful the outpouring of support and ask that you please continue to keep the Roberto family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to everyone who attended. As a reminder, tomorrow's memorial service will be livestreamed on the Department’s YouTube channel.

In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe has been established to assist the Roberto family during this difficult time.
CAMP GONZALES

LA County Fire Department with Local 1014 continues to work through Camp Gonzales to help previous offenders and folks who have paid their debt to society to find meaningful training and a path to wildland firefighters as they work to reshape their lives.  Individuals go through a rigorous and taxing qualification process to even be considered for the program, and completing the program is very hard with all the physical and NWCG training that our FSA program puts forward.

As the decline and eventual elimination of inmate Fire Crews becomes a reality, we must look to reshape our funding and crew configurations to keep the levels of crew we need in place for LA County and SRA area we serve.  We will be working with the Governor to secure funding for crews, and paid crews and crews formed from programs like Pine Grove, Ventura, and Camp Gonzales will all be part of the discussion.

Local 1014 Brothers Anthony Madrid, Eric Gunn, and Rigo Vazquez taught vital Fire Protection and Sprinkler System skills and knowledge to the first cohort class of Camp Gonzales.  Classroom time followed by intensive hands on work in tackling sprinkler system became a full day of training they will not soon forget.  Thanks to our brothers for contributing to the work to help these men and women who hail from our districts.
Legislative Update

Local 1014 has wrapped a busy legislative session working alongside our elected officials both at the state and local levels to get work done in the capital with legislation that affects Local 1014 Members in funding and authority with regard to our work.  Please take a look at the Bills Local 1014 has been helping with. These bills now rest with the Governor for signature or veto, and our work continues as we work to garner support with our alliances on these important items.

The 2023-2024 legislative session ended at midnight on August 31st. The Governor now has until September 30th to sign or veto all bills passed in the final weeks of the session.
