Recruit Classic 174 Graduation
Recruit Class 174 graduated new LA COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS ready to hit the stations and care for the people and communities we serve. This week has been difficult as we memorialized and remembered JT, and this Recruit Class is a special class of extraordinary women and men who have taken on the task of rising to join the ranks of the best Firefighters and Fire Personnel in the world.
Recruit Class 174 is the epitome of “TEAM,” and they employed all of our Core Values of "Caring - Courage - Commitment - Community - Integrity - Teamwork" in not just the tasks to train and become firefighters and firefighter-paramedics but also to getting through life. Class Valedictorian Michael Padilla and his wife, Iris, lost their beautiful 3-year-old daughter Emilia to cancer. This tragedy hit hard, and Firefighter Padilla reflected on a day when all of Class 174 brothers and sisters surrounded him on the grinder as he cried and grieved alongside his now lifelong fire family. Brother Padilla and Class 174 banded together to support each other and earn today’s graduation and our “County Bear” on the LA County Firefighter Badge. They are a testament to our solidarity in our LA County Fire Family and our long-standing traditions of caring for each other.
Additionally, Class 174 is the final group of Fire Suppression Aids who were hired by the Department off the FFT list and were almost left behind until Local 1014 filed an unfair labor practice charge and went to work with Chief Marrone to undo list issues and civil service issues. We have a robust “Internal Promotional Exam” process known as a bridge that Local 1014 also implemented in full swing. Seeing all the Camp Crews up at LAO to show support as they completed the journey to Firefighters was truly special today.
Finally, Declan McOsker, son of Mike McOsker, a Local 112 Executive Board Member and proud firefighter from LA City who unexpectedly passed away soon after his retirement, graduated today and had his grandfather from LAFD pin his badge on. President Gillotte knew Brother Mike very well. This family is a testament to the proud tradition and legacy of Firefighting. Declan was also one of the FSA brothers that brought the issue of hiring and almost being left behind to our attention and did all the groundwork for what we needed to prevail.
May all of these new Local 1014 Brothers and Sisters go out into the field and work hard as part of our team serving others, but may they also, in the spirit of Firefighter Padilla and his family, be an inspiration to us all in working together in the “Best Job We Ever Had” - COUNTY! - Local 1014 Strong. |

Memorial Service for Fire Fighter James O. Taylor
Family, friends, and colleagues gathered together at the West Angeles Church of God In Christ Church in Los Angeles yesterday to celebrate the life of Fire Fighter James O. Taylor.
James was remembered for being more than a dedicated public servant - he was a mentor to many, a community hero, and also a cherished son and brother. He was well-respected by all who knew and loved him.
James faithfully served the LACoFD and Los Angeles County residents for over 36 years. During the memorial service, the flag that flew over Fire Station 38 was presented to James’ mother and sister by Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone along with a bible from Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte, and James’ firefighter badge from LA County Stentorians President Johnny Gray III. A Flag Ceremony was also held at Fire Station 38 this week.
May God bless James, his family, his memory, and the loved ones he leaves behind. He will never be forgotten.

Captains Recruitment/Emergency Hiring Webinar
Special thanks to Vice President Tony Carcioppolo and Director Chris Reade from Local 1014, and BC Derek Chapman and BC Jason Gorbani, who led a Labor / Management informational webinar for candidates considering moving up in rank to FIRE CAPTAIN. Thank you to the over 170 people who attended the webinar and the over 200 who submitted questions.
The staffing shortages in the rank and the recent testing process results gave rise to a need to do something different to not fall behind in the ranks. We found an initiative in the County that would allow us to craft and build an “Emergency Hire Captains” process under a homeless initiative where our crews are responders to such incidents.
We have worked with Chiefs Chapman and Gorbani to craft a process that will examine seniority and true work experience, and after an interview, those selected will take part in an actual Officers Candidate School, with a requirement to pass the training to move to a 90-day task book mentor style finish in the field. This will be the first time in a collaboration that training and meeting the marks will be the benchmark to earn the badge, not just a crafted written and ratings from records.
We are excited to try something new that might give us insight into a better process in the future, but certainly, we will work to get the top 60-plus candidates into the Academy and for those who graduate into the field to begin the next phase of their amazing careers. For all the candidates preparing their resumes, their interview points, and their path to take on this role to leadership, good luck, and work hard to make us all proud.
Thank you to Training and Human Resources for their help. We have attached a brief outline of the PowerPoint, including the contact information for Human Resources regarding the hiring process. As a reminder, if applicants have lost their EMT card, they are encouraged to provide screenshots of their EMT Cert status from the State Website (HTTPS://EMSVERIFICATION.EMSA.CA.GOV/VERIFICATION/), and that shall suffice for the application.
FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO SUBMIT YOUR PROOF OF CERTIFICATIONS, CONTACT THE HUMAN RESOURCES DIVISION’S EXAMINATION SECTION AT (213) 466-5500 OR FIRE-FIRECAPTAIN@FIRE.LACOUNTY.GOV. |
