Friday Update 12-20-24
Updated On: Dec 23, 2024

Brothers and Sisters,

This week, we are proud to share some joyous news: Brendan Mcdonough of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew was recently hired by the City of Prescott Fire Department. At his badge ceremony was our LACOFD Fire Family, including Peer Lead Scott Ross. His badge was pinned by our own Joe Woyjeck, whose son Kevin was one of the 19 hotshots killed that fateful day. Seeing the fire family come together, heal, and celebrate this incredible accomplishment for Brendan was a holiday miracle.

In Brendan's own words:  "I am home. Graduating the fire academy marks a profound moment in my life, shaped by so many influential people, places, and events....To my 19 brothers, I know you are proud and I am forever grateful for you. I promise to live a life selflessly serving."
FRINGE BENEFITS Negotiations Update

Yesterday, we began fringe bargaining with our coalition allies at the Coalition of County Unions (CCU). With rising costs of healthcare and medical plans becoming more expensive we will stand in solidarity to ensure we keep healthcare costs low for all our members.

This year, we will be fighting for increases in the money you get for your Choices benefits. The fringe table is also the place where we fight for other items such as paid holidays, vacation days, sick leave, and other protected leaves.

These negotiations won’t be easy, but we won’t rest until we get the best contract for all our members. The unions are not here to play games like the county. The county never wants to give things for free; they are in the business of taking, so it’s imperative we fight. As things evolve, we will keep you posted.

Please consider helping our brother Matt and his family as his baby faces a kidney transplant. He is a very hard working paramedic and firefighter, and the sole provider for their family, is very likely going to have to take days off of work to be with his family.

We are asking for as many prayers as possible for the Hoyt family during this difficult time.

All money donated will be given directly to Megan and Matt to help with the medical bills they will encounter during this whole process for Dylan’s kidney transplant

Cal Fire Foundation SAVE Program Available to those Impacted by the Franklin Fire

The California Fire Foundation - our foundation, through the CFF-JAC, supports any Local 1014 Members whose homes have been impacted by the Franklin Fire. Easing that burden is what the California Fire Foundation’s Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency (SAVE) program is all about. It brings immediate, short-term relief to victims of home fires throughout California.

The SAVE card is a $250 gift card given to eligible survivors of fire and natural disasters by firefighters on scene who are enrolled in the SAVE program. This allows survivors to purchase basic necessities such as food, clothing, gas, medicine, or a place to stay the night in the immediate aftermath of a house fire.

The California Fire Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, provides emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and the communities they protect. Formed in 1987 by California Professional Firefighters, the California Fire Foundation’s mandate includes an array of survivor and victim assistance programs and community initiatives.

If you are an LA County Fire Fighter or Lifeguard through LACOLA and need help, please reach out to the California Fire Foundation at save@cpf.org or (916) 641-1707.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
