LA COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS GET IT DONE DURING FIRESTORM 2025
Local 1014 Members, the Local 1014 Executive Board, the Fire Chief, and the Executive Staff all leaned in hard to get it done during Fire Storm 2025. With over six fires burning simultaneously, affecting LA County Fire Department and our Members with the Eaton Fire in Altadena and the Palisades Fire in LA City. Coastal areas took center stage for the world to watch as 100 mph wind-driven fires consumed tinder-dry brush and homes, and regrettably, some loss of life.
LA County Fire Department - Fire Department Fire Family stepped up like never before, with EVERY MEMBER not injured recalled to duty and in rotations working until we had nothing left to give. Fire Chief Marrone and his Executive Staff, in constant contact and talks with President Gillotte and the Board, worked not only on the front lines but also each day behind the scenes on staffing, funding, state and federal aid issues, shared local resources between cooperating agencies to get this work done.
Our members have done incredible work to save lives, property, and animals. We should all be incredibly proud of our work. Fire Chief Marrone represented us amazingly well and professionally both in our work and with the press. Special shout out to our boss, Chief Marrone, for his soulful and heartfelt capture of the fires, our work, and the tragedy that ensued.
For the first time in our Department’s history, every member who was not injured and off was recalled to duty. Our excellent Fire Dispatchers took the heart-wrenching calls for help, often with no resources left to send. Our FSAs with Camp Foremen and Sups stretched thin, right alongside our Heavy Equipment and Forestry members working the Dozers beyond limits. Our helicopters, both Pilots and FFPMs, made incredible drops that showed the world how its done. Our Forestry and Fire Prevention folks, along with Fire Department Staff and LACOLA Lifeguard members as parts of our IMT teams, our communications teams, and our PEER Support Teams, banded together. All held together by the Utility Driver mafia getting it done. And, of course, our Health Hazmat teams are playing an intricate part in reoccupying as well as health and safety for our members. Additionally, the members back in the stations were left without full staffing, running thousands of calls per day, taking care of all we serve, and more. We should be amazingly proud.
There are so many heroic stories coming back from individuals, crews, and companies of silent, unseen victories in rescuing lives and saving property, along with tragedies and near misses with, thankfully, all minor injuries. The heroic public and communities from near and far coming to base camps to feed our crews and those displaced and to help with animals and PEER Support with our PEER Support dogs, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Last but certainly not least, thank you to our fire families, wives, husbands, and partners who support these efforts in the most critical way at home. Without that support, we would not be the Department we are today. Thank you.
The levels of human kindness, compassion, and caring from our people, Fire Fighters from all over California, including our front-line brothers and sisters from Cal Fire, Forest Service, LA City Fire, Ventura County Fire, Orange County Fire and beyond, teamed up with LACOLA Lifeguards, LA County ALADS and PPOA Sheriffs Deputies and our own Nathan Hotchman (newly elected DA) to keep areas secure. Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Kathryn Barger cleared red tape and provided the aid needed to the folks affected. Thank you.
These past couple of weeks have not come without loss. Over a dozen IAFF members have lost homes, lifeguards, and sheriff’s deputies, and some of our nonsworn fire department families and retirees have also lost homes. We will begin repairing and healing them with the resources and help needed. All of this while our members and our Department stay on the front lines during their own loss to help others.
Please notify us of any affected members. We can help with resources above and beyond the resources available. Call the Union Hall or get ahold of any Director or the Department. We are coordinating the support in-house. |
